Via Freeview HD

  1. Using your Freeview TV or set-top box remote, press the subtitle button. This is usually represented by SUB, SUBT, STTL or a line of dots at the bottom of a square.
  2. Select English subtitles on.

To turn captions off

Via Freeview Satellite

If you have a built-in Teletext decoder, eg Zinwell brand

  1. Push the Teletext button on your Freeview remote. This is usually represented as TTX, TXT or three horizontal lines.
  2. Either dial 801 in Teletext or select Subtitles if this option appears.


If you don’t have a built-in Teletext decoder, eg Hills brand

  1. Push the Teletext button on your TV remote. This is usually represented as TTX.
  2. Dial 801.

To turn captions off

  1. Push the Teletext button on your Freeview remote if you have a built-in Teletext decoder or push the Teletext button on your TV remote if you don't have a built-in Teletext decoder. This button is usually represented as TTX.
  2. Unselect subtitles if this option appears.

Via IGLOO

  1. Using your IGLOO remote, press menu.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Display.
  4. Set the subtitle language to English.

To turn captions off

  1. Using your IGLOO remote, press menu.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Display.
  4. Set the subtitle language to off.

Via TiVo

For one programme

  1. From live TV, using your TiVo remote, press the info button.
  2. Press the down arrow until the ear icon is highlighted
  3. Press the select button to turn the captions on

To set permanently on

  1. From TiVo Central, select Messages and Settings.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Displays.
  4. Select Captioning.
  5. Select ‘on; display captions if available’.

To turn captions off

For one programme

  1. From live TV, using your TiVo remote, press the info button.
  2. Press the down arrow until the ear icon is highlighted
  3. Press the select button to turn the captions off

To set permanently off

  1. From TiVo Central, select Messages and Settings.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Displays.
  4. Select Captioning.
  5. Select 'Off: Turn Off Captions'.

Via SKY Digital

  1. Using your TV remote, press the text button to display Teletext. This is usually represented by TXT, TTX or three horizontal lines.
  2. Dial 801.
  3. The captions need to be selected each time you turn on the TV.

To turn captions off

Via MY SKY HDi or SKY box

To turn on for all channels with captions available

  1. Using your SKY remote, press the setup button.
  2. Select Audio & Subtitles.
  3. Select Language.
  4. Set preferred subtitle language to English using the left or right arrow.
  5. Press the green button to save new settings.

To turn captions off

  1. Using your SKY remote, press the setup button.
  2. Select Audio & Subtitles.
  3. Select Language.
  4. Set preffered subtitle language to Off using the left or right arrow.
  5. Press the green button to save new settings.

Via MY SKY

  1. On your SKY remote, push the active button.
  2. Select System Setup.
  3. Select System Settings.
  4. Select Picture Settings.
  5. Select Captions and banner settings
  6. Set closed captions to on.
  7. Save your settings.

To turn captions off

  1. On your SKY remote, push the active button.
  2. Select System Setup.
  3. Select System Settings.
  4. Select Picture Settings.
  5. Select Captions and banner settings
  6. Set closed captions to off.
  7. Save your settings.

Via Vodafone SKY set-top box

  1. While on a channel, using your remote, push the yellow button. 
  2. If captions or audio description are available, an options menu will appear on screen.
  3. Select Subtitles and press OK

To turn captions off

  1. Press the 'i' button on your remote.
  2. The words 'Hide Subtitles' will be shown on the banner.
  3. Press the yellow button on your remote.
  4. The words will change to 'Show Subtitles'
  5. Press the exit button to return to TV.
