My captions or audio description aren’t working properly. How do I fix them?

Can I turn AD on permanently for all channels?

Yes. Follow these instructions to turn audio description on permanently for your TV or set-top box. However, this is not possible through SKY Digital and some Freeview boxes.

Why isn’t every programme captioned or audio described?

Able is fully funded by NZ On Air and allocates funding available to caption and audio-describe programmes, with a focus on local and prime-time content.

Why isn’t every channel captioned or audio described?

Able provides captions for five free-to-air channels – TVNZ 1, TVNZ 2, TV3, Prime and DUKE – and audio description for TVNZ 1 and TVNZ 2. These channels have specialist equipment to broadcast captions and/or audio description. Extending the service to additional channels would require more funding.

Why don’t the captions include all the dialogue?

If the dialogue is rapid, the captions can sometimes be edited down so that the text can be read comfortably.

Are all captions for New Zealand TV produced in New Zealand?

Able creates captions from scratch for many programmes. However, when a programme is captioned overseas, where possible the caption file is purchased and formatted for broadcast here.

Is all audio description for TV produced in New Zealand?

Many audio described programmes are produced here. However, when available, audio description files are purchased and formatted for broadcast here.

Are TV advertisements captioned?

Selected adverts are captioned. Able provides a commercial captioning service. Advertisers can pay a small fee to have captions added to their commercial, enabling access to a wider audience.

Are there any laws to regulate captioning or audio description in New Zealand?

There is no regulation in New Zealand regarding captioning or audio description.

Why aren’t TV3 news and other live programming on TV3 captioned?

Unfortunately, the necessary infrastructure is not available at TV3 to do this.

Is TVNZ OnDemand or 3NOW On Demand captioned?

No. Able is very keen to help make captions available online for programmes captioned for TV, and we will keep working towards this.

How do I access captioned or AD listings?

You can view captioned listings on your TV’s electronic programme guide, the TVNZ or MediaWorks websites, and publications, such TV Guide and magazines. You can also sign up to our mailing list to receive a weekly schedule.

Live captioners use pre-prepared material where possible and respeaking speech recognition captioning for live-to-air segments.
